Position Summary

Works with the computer aided engineering (CAE) group assisting with projects at different levels throughout the co-op program.

Team Summary:

The CAE group is responsible to perform CAE and simulation activities for product/system creation, and/or verification for all innovation and development projects, utilizing internal and with external resources. Responsible to ensure product meets performance specifications prior to creation of physical prototypes. Use analytical tools to determine root cause and design changes required to remedy premature failures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Systematic use of simulation early in the design process to prevent failure modes in products and assist project leaders in problem resolution.

  • Apply engineering principles & simulation techniques using finite elements, multi-body dynamics, CFD or other analysis tools to guide the creation of new and modification of existing product/concepts.

  • Assist project leaders with the developing, maintaining and overseeing of the CAE plans to ensure objectives and deliverables are predictably and consistently achieved.

  • Support project leaders to create new product concepts by applying engineering principles and analytical techniques.

  • Supports and adheres to policies, procedures, and operational guidelines related to established quality management system (IATF 16949).

  • Maintains working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.

  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Expected Learning Outcomes:

  • Create CAE simulation models for Strength / NVH / CFD / Thermal analysis for driveline components.

  • Run and debug CAE simulations. Undertake results post-processing tasks including interpretation, analysis reports and provide design improvement suggestions to meet performance requirements.

  • Demonstrate ability to systematically solve problems and perform root cause analysis using CAE simulation tools and analytical techniques.

  • Develop understanding of Magna Powertrain’s transfer case products including their functional and performance requirements and the role of virtual development tools (i.e. CAE) to support product development processes.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA required.

  • Enrolled in an engineering program with an accredited school.

  • Understand the basics of mechanical engineering design and product development.

  • Relevant coursework in Strength of Materials, NVH / Structural Dynamics / CFD / Thermal Analysis and Finite Element Methods.

  • Basic exposure to CAE analysis tools like HyperMesh, ABAQUS, OpenFoam or other relevant tools preferred.

  • Knowledge in computer based software, strong organizational/communication skills, and ability to work with others in a team environment.

Work Environment

Office Environment; limited travel required.

While working in this environment, the employee will be exposed to machinery, moving equipment and material, moderate noise, airborne particles, fumes and various levels of temperature created by manufacturing processes.
