What You Will Do

The Product Engineering group in PT-5 consists of a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists that supports plutonium programs across the entire Pit Technologies (PT) Division; support includes production and manufacturing, pit surveillance, research & development, and sub-critical experiments. The primary role of product engineering is to provide configuration management to the suite of PT programmatic missions from development through production.

For this position, you will primarily provide support for our Process Materials team, a key responsibility of the PT-5 Product Engineering group. This position will require knowledge and management of production material selection and development to ensure materials needed for plutonium pit production are procured timely to the appropriate quality level. Applicants should have experience in identifying and testing critical material characteristics to certify items used in production. In addition to managing process materials, this role will also support pit production as a product engineer on one of the following teams: Pyrochemistry, Casting, Machining, Assembly, and Inspection.

Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills. Experience working with quality engineers to ensure materials meet procurement quality requirements is desired.

Engineering: Demonstrated/thorough/advanced knowledge of and experience in engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, nuclear, chemical, or industrial.

Manufacturing: Experience working in production or manufacturing, nuclear experience is preferred.

Initiative & Work Ethic: Willingness and enthusiasm to take initiative and learn in a highly supportive environment. Proactive in asking questions to learn and perform work. Demonstrated use of adaptive, creative, and collaborative approaches to solve problems, overcome obstacles, and handle uncertainty. Passion for the work and the mission.

Quality Knowledge: Demonstrated/thorough knowledge of, and experience in, conducting troubleshooting, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting quality assurance using processes such as root cause analysis or others. Provide thorough and accurate documentation of technical and/or statistical reports and ensure quality assurance compliance.

Quality Standards: Demonstrated/thorough knowledge of and experience using national consensus standards of quality assurance, such as ASME, ISO, IPC, ANSI/ASME, AS9100, NQA-1, and NAP 401.1A, etc. Thorough/advanced knowledge creating processes and procedures for use by internal or external personnel.

Education and Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or a related science, 2 years of job-related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience; this can be obtained through the 1-year onsite NET (New Employee Training) Academy.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, and quality requirements. Knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis. Demonstrated knowledge of the Conduct of Operations. Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or similar). Other desired qualifications include, but are not limited to:

• Interdisciplinary project experience with varied technical backgrounds within a group

• Willingness to take initiative on new tasks or projects.

• Design to manufacturing experience.

• Technical writing consisting of project proposals, technical research, and summary presentations.

• Materials Selection/Design

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):

Work Environment:

Day-to-day activities take place in an office environment though candidates would need the ability to work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and the ability to wear protective clothing as necessary.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management .

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
