About the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH):

Role Overview:

You will serve as a specialist in the surveillance and control of Hepatitis B disease with an emphasis on Perinatal Hepatitis B (PHB) prevention. You will investigate positive Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) lab reports for all childbearing females aged 12-50 years. Pregnant women who are diagnosed with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) receive education on Hepatitis B disease and the importance of newborn Hepatitis B vaccination as well as services to assure their access to health care. Newborn is followed (case managed) to ensure post-exposure prophylaxis is done at the hospital, hepatitis B vaccine series is administered, and post-vaccination tests are completed. Household and sexual contacts of the case mother are also identified, provided education, tested, and vaccinated. Case managers serve as a resource for hospitals, laboratories, physicians, and local health departments regarding laws, PHB protocols and policies, and Hepatitis B vaccination recommendations. Employees focus on prevention of disease and ensures access to health care for these populations.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Assess current public health issues related to a program area.

  • Maintain an effective liaison and referral system between the agency, local health departments, health clinics and other service providers.

  • Direct the development of public health programs, policies and procedure manuals.

  • Manage a grant or budget for a specific public health program allocating resources and determining expenditures.

  • Collect and analyze relevant program data and makes available to state and local agencies.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Extensive knowledge of public health theories, principles, practices and strategies.

  • Considerable knowledge of the organization and function of state and local health agencies.

  • Considerable knowledge of program planning and implementation techniques.

  • Working knowledge of public health laws governing state and local health jurisdictions.

  • Effective communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other local, state and federal agency staff.
