Position Summary Information

General Summary

TheShop Meter Mechanicperforms testing and mechanical repair work on water meters, test equipment and related equipment. This position also performs repairs and/or rebuilds fire hydrant meters.

Essential Functions

  • Tests, repairs and rebuilds, commercial and domestic water meters from various manufacturers and of various sizes

  • Replaces worn and/or defective parts and reassembles meters

  • Tests meters for accuracy, makes any needed adjustment to achieve accuracy and inspects for leaks

  • Enter relevant meter information into the system of record used by the Commission

  • Ensures all repaired meters meet AWWA and WSSC Water standards

  • Repairs and calibrates computerized field and shop test equipment

  • Evaluates new meters and related materials in accordance with the Commissions product evaluation policy

  • Stays abreast of changing technology

  • Maintains shop equipment

  • Performs quality assurance test on new meter shipments and other products

  • Completes logs and other forms as required

  • Performs hot lead repairs

  • Performs special and customer witnessed meter tests

  • Performs Truck Inspections on tanker trucks and trailers that participate in the Fire Hydrants Leasing Program

  • Issue Fire Hydrant Meters as part of the Lease Program, fill out associated paperwork when issuing or returning Fire Hydrant Meters and associated equipment

  • Utilizes forklifts, overhead cranes, and other mechanical equipment

  • Uses a variety of hand power tools, and commercial pressure washer

  • Maintains clean tools and work area

  • Maintains accurate repair and other administrative records

  • Works within safety guidelines as prescribed by OSHA , MOSH , and WSSC Water

  • Issues meters 1 ½” to 12“ to contractors, plumbers and WSSC Water account holders

  • Transfers meters from shop to satellite facilities, and transports meters removed from accounts to the shop for processing

  • Processes and identifies meters to be return to the manufacturer for warranty issue

  • Operates sand blast machines

  • Assists field operations with fire hydrant pressure testing

  • Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned

Work Environment And Physical Demands

Work is performed in a meter shop environment; may be required to lift up to 100lbs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Good knowledge of all commercial and domestic meter components parts, disassembly, and assembly, repair, and test procedures as well as test parameters

  • Thorough understanding of AWWA and WSSC Water meter test standards

  • Ability to properly and safely use hand, power, and shop tools

  • Ability to use mechanical and electronic test instruments

  • Ability to work in cramped spaces underground for extended periods and work outside during inclement weather

  • Ability to give and follow verbal and written instructions and write legibly

  • Ability to work effectively with other employees and the general public

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • 1+ years meter related or mechanical experience

Additional Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date

  • Must possess or obtain a DOT Medical Card within 90 days of hire or transfer

  • Must possess or obtain a WSSC Forklift Operator Permit within 90 days or hire or transfer

Preferences

Experience working in a shop or warehouse environment

Salary$22.28 - $32.51 per hour
