St. Luke's University Health Network Arboretum Internship - Anderson Campus in Easton, Pennsylvania

Internship to Maintain the exterior grounds including all landscaping, parking lots, roadways and parking deck. Install new landscaping in areas for visual, safety or other reasons.

  • Planting flowers and smaller shrubs.

  • Light pruning minor damage on young trees.

  • Size and record tree growth.

  • Tree Disease monitoring, recording, and forwarding distresses samples to Penn State extension for test results

  • Forest ecology – transport soil samples to testing locations to accurately manage the well being of our trees and forest areas.

  • Forest ecology-record, document and take pictures when possible of animals and birds witnessed in Arboretum.

  • Water Trees

  • Planning and sowing wildflower areas.

  • Install and manage signage.

  • Identify weeds and invasive species, work on corrective action.

  • Manage path for holes or wash out areas and fill in ruts.

  • Patrol and police walking paths for garbage or off situations.

  • Weeding rose garden, trimming rose garden.

  • Install and manage deer proofing on trees.

  • Manage and maintain bird feeders.

  • Cleaning and arranging Adirondack chairs.

  • Keep sunflower pathways presentable. Keep mulch raked smoothly, remove garbage and fallen sunflowers.

  • Cut flowers for events.

  • Light mulching

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting for up to six hours per day, five hours at a time; standing for up to six hours per day, three hours at a time: walking for up to six hours per day, five hours at a time: frequently fingering, handling, firm grasping, twisting, and turning: frequently lifting, and carrying up to 100 pounds; occasionally pushing, and pulling up to 250 pounds; frequently stooping/bending, squatting, crouching, kneeling, crawling, and climbing; frequently reaching above shoulder level; occasionally touching as relates to feeling with fingertips without visual contact when repairing equipment; hearing as it relates to normal conversation as well as high and low frequencies; seeing as it relates to general, near, far, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Works under the supervision of the Supervisor of Thomas Fiorini

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid driver’s license.

POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:

  1. Burns, cuts, and punctures: use of protective equipment, gloves and long sleeve shirts.

  2. High elevations: proper use of ladders, and safety ropes.

  3. Slippery surfaces: use of rubber boots.

  4. Operating machinery: use of rubber or leather boots, goggles, headset and gloves.

  5. Extreme noise: headset hearing protection available.

  6. Pesticide and chemical hazards: rubber gloves, goggles and face mask and respirator available.

EDUCATION:

Highschool or GED preferred
