Michigan Sugar Company has a full-time campaign opportunity (August through April) for a General Laborer at the Caro Factory. This position is an hourly position working various schedules and is part of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers Local # 260-G.

Job Summary:

The General Laborer is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment in the factory, as well as any other area in or around the Factory as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Bring chemicals or supplies into different locations in the factory as needed
  • Dump or wash remelt sugar into sugar end or beet end as needed
  • Complete and properly document assigned tasks
  • Clean/change filters as needed
  • Clean areas of the factory as needed
  • Help on any stations as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Must adhere to factory PPE requirements
  • Must follow Michigan Sugar Company requirements for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) when working in designated GMP zones and report food safety issues that may be observed
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment

Position Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must maintain (Company provided) valid lift truck license and demonstrate safe use and practices of lift truck operations
  • Must have a valid Michigan driver's license or a doctor's certificate for evidence of vision requirements

Key Competencies:

  • Ability to work SAFELY with minimal supervision, near moving mechanical parts, in high places
  • Able to work with all required PPE such as, but not limited to, hearing protection, hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to wet, hot and/or humid conditions, airborne particles, and cleaning chemicals
  • May need to attend periodic training classes to improve skills

Michigan Sugar Company was founded in 1906 when six smaller sugar companies merged their operations. In 2002, Michigan Sugar Company became a grower-owned cooperative and in 2004, it merged with Monitor Sugar Company to form the company that exists today.

Michigan Sugar Company is headquartered in Bay City and has sugarbeet processing facilities in Bay City, Caro, Croswell and Sebewaing, Michigan. Its nearly 900 grower-owners plant and harvest up to 160,000 acres of sugarbeets each year in 20 Michigan counties, as well as Ontario, Canada. Those beets are sliced at the factories and turned into about 1.3 billion pounds of sugar annually.

That sugar is sold to industrial, commercial and retail customers under the Pioneer and Big Chief brands.

Michigan Sugar Company has 930 year-round employees and an additional 1,100 seasonal workers. It is the No. 1 employer in Huron County, the No. 2 employer in Bay and Sanilac counties and the No. 3 employer in Tuscola County. The company's annual payroll is more than $65 million and its annual local economic impact is about $500 million.
